CHICAGO — A 21-year-old man was fatally shot in East Garfield Park Tuesday morning.

Around 7:10 a.m., the man was driving through an alley near the 700 block of North Spaulding Avenue when a man walked up to the car and began shooting, striking the man multiple times in his head, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

He was identified as Derick Coopwood, of the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue. He was pronounced dead at 8:58 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No one is in custody for the shooting, which appears to be gang-related, Estrada said.
