PORTAGE PARK — The corner at Belmont and Austin avenues has a brand-new look courtesy of St. Patrick High School.

School officials have turned the northeast corner of the busy intersection near the all-boys Catholic high school, 5900 W. Belmont Ave., into an urban garden.

The 20,000-square foot garden will feature a statue of St. John Baptist de La Salle, who founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, which runs St. Patrick, and is the patron saint of teachers.

In addition to the statue, the garden will feature the American, Illinois and St. Patrick flags as well as native plants, evergreen trees and shrubs centered around a masonry Shamrock design, officials said.

The garden will help beautify the neighborhood, the school and provide additional green space on campus, school officials said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Monday.
