CHICAGO — Police shot a man wielding a gun in Englewood Saturday night.

Around 8:15 p.m, as police were answering a call of a man with a gun in the 5800 block of South Morgan Street they saw a man running from the residence and chased him, police said.

Officers confronted the man in the back of the residence and ordered him to drop the weapon he was holding. The man refused and an officer shot him, police said.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital and a weapon was recovered, police said.

According to Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, the parents of the victim had called police after their son had kicked in the back of their home and opened fire inside the home.

When police arrived just after 8 p.m. the man was in the back yard. Police pursued the man through the home before confronting him on the porch, Camden said.

He was standing on one of the top steps when police order him to drop the weapon. The man placed the weapon at his feet and was ordered to move away from the weapon but refused. Instead, the man bent over and reached again for the weapon. Officers then opened fire at the man, Camden said.

The 33-year-old man was shot three times and listed in serious condition at Stroger Hospital, Camden said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
