CHICAGO — One man was killed and two others were wounded after police interrupted an armed robbery in Auburn Gresham, police said.

Around 11:55 p.m., police officers were patrolling the 7900 block of South Justine Street when they saw two armed men approach two other men and try to rob them, according to a statement from police.

During the robbery, the two armed men shot the two victims, police said. When the officers confronted them the two armed men ran off, police said.

As the officers chased one of the offenders, he turned and pointed a dark object in the direction of the officers. In response, one of the officers shot him, the police statement said.

Both men shot during the robbery were transported to area hospitals, and one later died. The man shot by police officers was taken to an area hospital.

The man who died was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Tepete Davis, 42.

The second robber is not in custody, the statement said.
