LINCOLN SQUARE — What do Leonid Brezhnev, Satchel Paige and the water main under Rockwell Street have in common? They all were born in 1906.

Time for the water pipe to retire.

Work has begun to install 4,983 feet of new 8-inch water main under Rockwell, between Montrose and Lawrence avenues. The main also is being replaced under Eastwood Avenue, between Virginia and Western avenues.

Work is expected to last through January 2015, with restoration of the pavement and parkway to follow in April 2015.

Traffic and parking will be restricted 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside of these hours, Rockwell and Eastwood will be open to local traffic only. Parking will be permitted, but cars must be moved by the beginning of the next work day.

In 2011, the Water Department announced a plan to replace 900 miles of 100-year-old water mains within 10 years, slightly more than one-fifth of the city's 4,300-mile network of pipes.

The new mains cost about $2 million per mile.
