THE LOOP  — For the second time in five months, a construction barge took on water and sank in the Chicago River, this time near Lake Street.

The Chicago Police Department and its Marine Unit responded to the sinking barge in the Chicago River at around 12:35 p.m., said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago police spokeswoman,

At 12:50, the barge had taken on water in the center, and that part had disappeared beneath the murky river the 100 block of North Riverside Plaza, which is just south of the Green Line "L" bridge over the South Branch of the Chicago River.

No injuries have been reported, Pacheco said.

In July, a small construction barge being used to build the Chicago Riverwalk sank to the bottom of the river near LaSalle Street.

A city spokesman said the barge was part of a private construction project for Clark Construction, and not doing work commissioned by the city. A Clark representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
