CHICAGO — A 31-year-old man was fatally shot as he drove through Portage Park early Wednesday.
Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, the man was driving with his brother in the 5100 block of West Waveland Avenue when someone inside a blue SUV opened fire, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman. The man crashed into a parked car after being shot in his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Pacheco said.
The man was identified as Gabriel Meneses, of Norridge. He was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
No one is in custody for the shooting, which appears to be gang-related, Pacheco said.
Monday morning students and teachers walked through the block on their way to Schurz High School, located a few blocks east. Charlie Silva, a teacher at the school for two years, said he felt anxious on his walk from his car to the school.
"This is the first time I've felt uneasy at all. I really worry about the children," he said.
