SOUTH AUSTIN — School is back in session, and kids at a back-to-school pep rally and backpack giveaway Saturday said they were excited about hitting the books.

The inaugural event was hosted by nonprofit organization The Darren Group.

Between jumping around in the bounce house, playing double dutch and getting free backpacks, kids shared with DNAinfo Chicago what they're most excited for this upcoming school year:

Atteron Dixon, Fourth Grade, Jacob Beidler Elementary School on the West Side.

"To get my math and science up, to get all of my grades up [and] to go to fifth grade," Atteron said, adding that he liked his science and math teachers best because they "teach [them] how to do things that are nice, and they give out treats."

Ariana Stevens, Second Grade, George Leland Elementary on the West Side

Ariana is most excited about music class. "I get to learn a lot of music," she said. "Then, when I grow up, I'm going to be able to make my own music!" When asked what kind of music, she said, "classic rock, I guess," while smiling and laughing.

Joshua Abercrombie, Fourth Grade, Meadow Ridge School in Orland Park

“My teacher, Ms. Esposito, because she lets us do our homework during class so I can go home and play around."

Natalia Wilson, Fifth Grade, George Leland Elementary on the West Side

"Meeting new friends and starting a new year [with] new teachers" is what Natalia is most excited about. "I like it!" she said excitedly.

Over the summer, Natalia said her family went a lot of places, and that they've been "moving back and forth." Her favorite subject is art.

Donisha Boothe, Fourth Grade, Learn Charter on the West Side

“To get my grades up in reading and social studies." Donisha said she plans to do that by listening and following directions.
