CHATHAM — When school starts Sept. 2 for Jane Neil Elementary School, its students, including those in wheelchairs, will be able to enjoy a new garden.

Valerie Hardy, a science teacher at Neil, 8555 S. Michigan Ave., began fundraising in June for the garden and thanks to donations largely from Chatham residents, $3,300 was successfully raised, she said.

"One resident donated $600. A dance group donated $300. And before I knew it donations were pouring in," Hardy said. "I cannot thank the parents and community enough for their generosity."

As a result, pavement leading to the garden was built, and one of two garden boxes constructed sits high enough for wheelchair students to participate.

Hardy said $400 is still needed to purchase seeds and equipment, including aprons and gloves, for the students.

"I'm confident we'll get it. The outpour of support we have gotten has been wonderful. It is good to see everyone coming together for the kids," Hardy said.

According to Chicago Public Schools, nearly half of the 381 students at the school have special needs and many require wheelchairs.

Earlier this year Hardy said the school received a $3,800 Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant.

Hardy said she got the idea to spearhead the garden project after students in wheelchairs told her they would like to have a garden.

"This [garden] all got started from the students. We have students in wheelchairs, blind, deaf, you name it," she said.

Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th), whose ward includes the school, said he supports the project and was happy to assist Hardy with it.
