BRIDGEPORT — Looking to avoid the lakefront during the Chicago Air and Water Show

Head to the South Side for a local group's very own, less noisy, version.

Now in its second year, the Bridgeport Air and Water Show takes place 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday at Palmisano Park, 2700 S. Halsted St. It's free.

Some 300 free kite kits will be distributed to kids, and volunteers will help them build and launch the kites into the sky. The guys from the Henry Palmisano Memorial Fishing Foundation will offer free fishing lessons in the quarry pond, assisted of course by the Fishmobile.

Also on Saturday, Sam Mattone, the nature park's volunteer steward, will lead tours around the quarry-turned-landfill-turned nature center, explaining how it's now covered with grass and wildflowers and native plant life.

As the sun begins to set, kids and adults can peer into Chicago's largest telescope for some urban stargazing led by the Chicago Astronomers.

Confirmed food trucks for the evening include Meatloaf-A-Go-Go, Porkchop, Bridgeport Pasty and Flirty Cupcakes. More food vendors could be added as the event draws closer.

The event is organized the Palmisano Park Advisory Council with help from a handful of local sponsors.
