CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police detective shot at two thieves attempting to flee a grocery store on the Northwest Side Wednesday night.

Around 7:08 p.m., the detective was shopping at a neighborhood grocery store in the 7300 block of West Foster Street when employees pointed out two men loading stolen merchandise into their car in the parking lot, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.

When the detective approached the men and told them she was a police officer, they drove their car at her, forcing her to pull out her gun and open fire "in fear for her life." No one was hit and the thieves were arrested a short time later, police said.

The detective was not injured in the incident and the matter is under investigation, police said.
