LITTLE ITALY — Lakeview-based Big G's Pizza is planning to open a second location along Taylor Street, replacing Sofia's Pizza.

With its proximity to UIC's campus, Big G's new location at 1132 W. Taylor St. will be ideal for the shop, which caters to a late-night crowd, according to Big G's manager Jack Keever.

"It’s a perfect location for the pizza concept we have," Keever said. "The 'gourmet by the slice' concept plays very well with college students."

Big G's, which opened its Lakeview location in May 2012, even delivers by the slice, with popular items including Jack Daniels BBQ Pork and Mac and Cheese pizza, Keever said. The Lakeview pizza spot got its start after owners of the now-closed Ian's Pizza 3463 N. Clark St. parted ways to start their own companies.

Ian's co-owner Dimitri Syrkin-Nikolau opened Dimo's Pizza on the site of the former Ian's, while Jaime Gamez went on to open Big G's.

Both restaurants serve Mac and Cheese pizza, which Keever said is by far the most popular slice at Big G's.

"That pizza brings unbridled enthusiasm and joy to anyone who walks in the front door and sees it for the first time," Keever said laughing. "We’re all vying for mac and cheese supremacy in the city of Chicago. We did not invent the concept but we've tried our damnedest to perfect it."

Keever said the Taylor Street spot should have its soft opening by Monday. For those willing to hang on until the shop's Aug. 25 grand opening, Big G's will be handing out $1 slices of any pizza on the Taylor Street menu, including Mac and Cheese.
