WEST ENGLEWOOD — When Earle STEM Elementary School students, teachers and staff return to school next month, they will be greeted by a new principal.

Chicago Public Schools officials said interim Principal Demetrius Hobson has resigned and the process to identify a permanent replacement at the school is underway. CPS had no further details about why he resigned or if he would still be working in the school system.

Hobson, who was appointed in January to replace Ketesha Melendez, could not be reached for comment.

According to CPS data, Earle, 2040 W. 62nd St., has been on academic probation for 11 years. In 2013, Earle moved into the Elaine Goodlow Elementary School building and became a receiving school for Goodlow after CPS closed it along with dozens of other underutilized schools.

Melendez was reassigned in January to Crispus Attucks Elementary School, which is scheduled to close after the 2014-15 school year.

When Melendez was reassigned, Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th), whose ward includes Englewood, said CPS had made a bad decision.

“CPS did our babies a disservice when they removed her,” Foulkes said. “Parents should be p----- off at this decision. She had Earle well on its way to recovery.”

CPS spokesman Joel Hood said at the time that community feedback "was one of many factors CPS took into account before” moving Melendez.

“CPS decided a change in leadership at Earle Elementary School is in the best interests of the students, parents and teachers," he said.
