CHICAGO — A pedestrian bridge linking Northerly Island to the planned George Lucas museum will be designed by Chicago's Jeanne Gang, the star architect who is already designing the landscape overhaul of the former Meigs Field.

Gang's Studio Gang, designers of the Aqua Tower in Chicago, was picked by Lucas to design the bridge, which will span the waters of Burnham Harbor. Gang will also design the landscape work around the museum, which is to be called the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

Lucas on Monday also announced that Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD Architects, will design the museum itself. Ma designed the Absolute Towers in Ontario, Canada; the Ordos Museum in Ordos, China; and Chaoyang Park Plaza in Beijing. VOA Associates, based in Chicago, will serve as the executive architect and lead the implementation of MAD’s design.

“We are bringing together some of the top architects in the world to ensure that our museum experience begins long before a visitor ever enters the building,” said George Lucas. “I am thrilled with the architectural team’s vision for the building and the surrounding green space. I look forward to presenting our design to the Chicago community.”

The musuem is promising to fund Gang's pedestrian bridge, which will link her landscaping of the museum to the re-done Northerly Island.

"We are excited to build upon our current work and collaborate to create a seamless transition between the Museum Campus and Northerly Island,” said Gang. “In keeping with the Northerly Island ethos, our design goal will be to create a combined ecological and urban habitat.”
