Black Harvest Film Fest to Tour Neighborhood Libraries

HYDE PARK — The Black Harvest Film Festival is breaking out of the Gene Siskel Film Center to show films across the city at four libraries this year.

The Chicago Bee, South Chicago, North Austin and Blackstone branches will all host four showings of films from the fest from Monday through Aug. 13.

All the screenings are free.

The screenings include “Text Tone” by Chicago-based filmmaker Sandrel Young about a man who loses his voice when faced with meeting his lover’s father and turns to texting to communicate.

The film is presented as a part of a series of shorts with “A Different Tree” and “Barbasol.”

“In Our Heads and About Our Hair,” a documentary by Hermanset Angaza about the politics of black hair, will be screened on its own with a discussion following.

The full schedule of screenings includes:

Chicago Bee Branch, 3647 S. State St., screenings at 5:30 p.m.

  • Monday, “In Our Heads About Our Hair”
  • July 28, Family Matters series of short films, including “Barbasol,” “A Different Tree” and “Text Tone”

South Chicago Branch, 9055 S. Houston Ave., screenings at 6 p.m.

  • Wednesday, “In Our Heads About Our Hair”
  • July 30, Family Matters series of short films, including “Barbasol,” “A Different Tree” and “Text Tone”

North Austin Branch, 5724 W. North Ave., screenings at 5:30 p.m.

  • Aug. 4, Family Matters series of short films, including “Barbasol,” “A Different Tree” and “Text Tone”
  • Aug. 6, “In Our Heads About Our Hair”

Blackstone  Branch, 4904 S. Lake Park Ave., screenings at 6 p.m.

  • Aug. 11, “In Our Heads About Our Hair”
  • Aug. 13, Family Matters series of short films, including “Barbasol,” “A Different Tree” and “Text Tone”
