DOWNTOWN — The State Street bridge will be lifted for a week to accommodate construction of the Chicago Riverwalk.

The bridge will remain raised starting at 6 a.m. Monday through Monday, July 21, Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) said in an email to constituents.

Traffic on State Street will be diverted, and CTA buses will be rerouted:

• Northbound traffic will detour west on Wacker Drive, north on LaSalle Stret, east on Illinois Street, then back on State Street;

• Southbound traffic will detour west on Grand Avenue, south on Clark Street, east on Wacker Drive and back on State Street;

• Northbound bicycles will detour west on Randolph Street, north on Dearborn Street, east on Kinzie Street and back to State Street;

• Bikes heading south will detour west on Kinzie Street, south on Dearborn Street, east on Lake Street and back to State Street.

The work is part of a $43 million project to extend the riverwalk six blocks, from State Street west to Lake Street along Wacker Drive.

Each block of the project will have a different theme: The Marina (between State and Dearborn streets); The Cove (between Dearborn and Clark streets); The River Theater (between Clark and LaSalle streets); The Swimming Hole (between LaSalle and Wells streets); The Jetty (Wells to Franklin streets); and The Boardwalk (between Franklin and Lake streets).

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called the riverwalk Chicago's "second shoreline," and hopes adding restaurants, retail space, boat docks, bike and kayak rentals and even a swimming hole will elevate the profile of the Downtown attraction.
