ANDERSONVILLE — Supporters and opponents of Passages Charter School's plans to add students can attend a public hearing Monday on the matter at Chicago Public Schools' downtown headquarters.

The hearing is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. at 125 S. Clark St.

Right now CPS provides Passages with funding for a maximum of 410 students, and the school wants to increase that number to 460.

School officials said increased demand has led the school to exceed the cap by about 20 students, which school officials contend has diluted the resources available to other Passages students and forced them into a tough decision: either turn kids away or ask CPS to provide money for more kids.

CPS held an initial public hearing about the plan in May.

Some community groups in Andersonville and Uptown have criticized the plan, arguing that expanding the school would siphon students and money from neighborhood schools, the same argument they used to blast Passages' failed proposal to open a high school early this year.
