CHICAGO — A West Pullman man is charged with murdering an 18-year-old high school student who was shot while sitting in a car with his girlfriend and friend last July.

Sean Shelton, 22, of the 12100 block of South Normal Avenue was ordered held without bail Wednesday, a year and two days after Stephon Wright was shot dead while in the 10400 block of South Green Street in Washington Heights.

The incident occurred at 8 p.m. on July 1, when Shelton approached the car Wright was in and began to shoot, police said.

Wright was shot in his right leg and tried to run from the car. After Wright fell to the ground, Shelton allegedly shot him in his neck.

“He told everybody to get out the car and run,” Wright's mother, Angela Ranson, said the day after his death. “Unfortunately, he got hit.”

Wright, who was on track to graduate from an alternative program at Percy Julian High School, was pronounced dead at Roseland Community Hospital. Ranson said she didn't want retaliation for her son's death.

“I want no one to ever have to sit in this seat like I am,” Ranson, 47, said. “I want no one out here to take retaliation for my son. We have to stop the violence.”

Shelton was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
