CHICAGO — A sheriff's deputy killed an Italian mastiff that was attacking woman holding a child in her arms in East Garfield Park Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. at Sacramento Avenue and Warren Boulevard, said Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy was driving an empty jail transport bus when he noticed a commotion in the area.

When he stop the car, he saw people beating a dog with sticks as it was latched onto the woman, who had two small children with her, including one in her arms.

The officer shot the dog twice before it let go of the woman. After the dog became "aggressive" again, the officer shot the dog a third time, killing it.

The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition is unknown, Ansari said.
