HYDE PARK — Roads ringing the University of Chicago’s main campus will be closed Saturday as the university celebrates its 519th convocation.
Streets around campus will be closed for most of Saturday from Ellis to University avenues, 57th to 59th streets.
Foot traffic for guests trying to get to campus is expected to be heaviest at 58th Street and Ellis Avenue starting at 7 a.m. and lasting through 4:30 p.m.
The keynote speaker this year will be Kerwin Charles, deputy dean of the Harris School of Public Policy and an economist who studies discrimination, economics of the family and inequality in labor markets.
The university will present honorary degrees to astronomer Wendy L. Freedman, microbial geneticist Jeffrey I. Gordon, philologist-linguist John Huehnergard, paleontologist Andrew H. Knoll, mathematician Grigoriy Margulis, linguist-philosopher Barbara Partee and statistician-geneticist Terence Speed.
