HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago will break ground on its new residence hall on Friday.

The new dorm, designed by architect Jeanne Gang, will dominate the 1100 block of East 55th Street, and a block of South Greenwood Avenue will be privatized to create new green space for 800 students living there.

Architects, planners and university officials will gather at the site at 10:30 a.m. Friday to celebrate the official beginning of construction, which is expected to finish in 2016 in time for students to move in for the fall quarter.

On April 30, the city approved selling the 5500 block of South Greenwood Avenue to the university to make way for the new dorm.

An athletic field has already been moved to south of the Midway Plaisance to make way for the dorm.

The new residence hall is estimated to cost $148 million to build.
