ROGERS PARK — The people behind Rogers Park's Deta's Cafe and Evanston's I Dream of Sweets Bistro have joined forces to open Patch Cafe — and have left their previous ventures behind.

James Watson and Lorenzo Mascherini, of the bistro, have partnered with Jonathan Villasenor to open Patch in Deta's former spot at 7555 N. Ridge Ave.

The cafe melds the cuisines of America, Serbia and Italy.

"It's a patchwork of everything," co-owner Mascherini said.

The native of Italy said he and his partner wanted to downsize their bistro and lessen their work loads.

"Our place over there was pretty big — and we were working our a---- off," he said.

Now, the trio is working to build a new customer base in Rogers Park.

The new menu includes an assortment of quiche, lasagna, pies, pastries, and coffee and tea.

"Everything is made in the house," Mascherini said.

Customer Priya Kapoor, who lives three blocks away and was eating lunch at the cafe Tuesday, said she prefers the new Patch to the old Deta's.

"Deta's had more of a dinner feel. This is more of a neighborhood cafe feel," she said.

Patch Cafe is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
