HYDE PARK — Celebrate Hyde Park, the neighborhood’s largest summer music festival, will not return this July to 53rd Street.

“Normally we start planning in December, and the fact that we haven’t leads me to believe it’s not going to happen,” said Wallace Goode, director of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.

In years past the festival has hosted about 40,000 revelers on 53rd Street for performances by acts like the Average White Band, Roy Ayers and the Family Stone Band.

Goode said businesses within the festival grounds were divided about the festival and the chamber, which organized the festival with the South East Chicago Commission.

“It was a 50-50 response; there are businesses along 53rd Street that are helped by the influx, and others thought they were hurt by having that many people in front of their business,” Goode said.
