CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy was in critical condition and a 16-year-old also was hospitalized after a shooting in the city's South Shore neighborhood Monday night, police said.

The boys were standing on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of East 69th Street when they heard gunshots and felt pain, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The 14-year-old boy was shot in the back and was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, Alfaro said.

The 16-year-old boy was shot in the upper right thigh and was also taken to Comer, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

As of early Tuesday, no one was in custody for the shooting.
