MOUNT GREENWOOD — News of the sale of Grant's Wonderburger in Mount Greenwood spread quickly, making it very difficult to get a table at the neighborhood lunch spot on Tuesday.

Customers were told that the Grant family — which founded the burger joint at 11045 S. Kedzie Ave. on March 8, 1954 — would no longer own the business when the calendar changes to 2014.

Few details were available, though it's believed the new owners will keep the business name as well as most menu items. Wonderburger is expected to be closed for a couple of weeks as ownership changes.

Alfred "Bill" Grant operated Wonderburger from 1954 until he retired in 1988. The tiny, 41-seat restaurant has since stayed within his family.

Rumors of a sale had been swirling for the past month, with estimates of a $200,000 price tag on the established business. Representatives of the business, though, declined comment on the sale.

On Tuesday, customers lined up to say goodbye to the local owners, who made burgers with their signature sauce and a side of curly fries.
