One Dead, Another Wounded in South Side Shootings

CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man was fatally shot and another man was injured in separate shootings on the South Side Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call of shots fired in the 11600 block of South Bishop Street in West Pullman and discovered a 22-year-old fatally wounded in the street, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man was identified as Mason Smith of the 11600 block of South Bishop. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:38 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, a 50-year-old man was shot while opening the back door of his apartment in the 700 block of East 133rd Street in the Altgeld Gardens. The man was shot in his left calf and was taken to Roseland Hospital, where he was treated and released, Alfaro said.
