NORTH CENTER — There's one less place to order a Stiegl and a side of spaetzle, now that Glunz Bavarian Haus has closed.

The news was announced via the restaurant's website with the simple statement: "Thank you for 10½  wonderful years! We enjoyed serving you! So many great memories!"

The Bavarian Haus was one of several holdings in the Glunz family empire, the foundation of which is the Louis Glunz Beer distributorship.

The restaurant/tavern opened in May 2003 at 4128 N. Lincoln Ave. on the site of the former Great Beer Palace. According to reports in the Chicago Tribune at the time, wooden chairs for the new business had been imported from the Hofbrauhaus in Germany to add to the air of authenticity.

Remaining neighborhood strongholds of German food and drink include the Chicago Brauhaus, Laschet's Inn and the Huettenbar.
