EDGEWATER — Beginning Labor Day, neighbors living near Loyola University's lake shore campus will be allowed to park in the school's main parking garage usually reserved for students and employees.
But eligible residents — living east of Glenwood Avenue, north of Glenlake Avenue and south of Pratt Boulevard in Rogers Park — will be limited to four passes a month and no overnight parking is allowed.
The temporary parking permits are valid from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday, and from 5-2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The university proposed the parking program this summer in an effort to placate community concerns that the permanent closure of the 6300 block of North Kenmore Avenue would make the tough chore of finding parking for guests even tougher.
Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) said last month he would support the closure of Kenmore and introduced an ordinance to the City Council that would allow the university — as a nonprofit entity — to buy most of the street for $1. A 100-foot section of the block in front of an apartment building would cost another $330,000, according to city estimates.
To use the parking only available in the main parking structure at 1110 W. Sheridan Road, eligible residents must visit the Loyola University Office of Community Relations at 6439 N. Sheridan Road during office hours to get a pass for a specific day and time.
Residents must provide proof that shows residency in the eligible area within the prior 30 days, according to the university.
