CHICAGO — Expecting dangerous waves and currents through early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a warning telling swimmers to stay out of Lake Michigan.

The agency said waves could get up to seven feet high, which could lead to life-threatening conditions for any swimmers, including those at the Chicago Park District beaches.

"Dangerous pounding waves and life-threatening rip currents are expected at the beaches," according to the alert. "People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water."

As of mid-day Tuesday, swim advisories — which mean children, elderly and those with weakened immune systems should use caution while in the water — were in effect for the following beaches:

• 12th Street

• 31st Street

• 57th Street

• Calumet

• Foster

• Hartigan

• Lane

• Montrose

• North Avenue

• Oakwood

• Ohio Street

• Osterman
