CHICAGO — Police are investigating a homicide in West Garfield Park.

A black male was shot in the head and abdomen at about 1:30 Friday afternoon in the 4400 block of West Adams Street, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

The man was identified as Vincent Mayes, 31, of the 0-100 block of North Laramie Avenue in South Austin.

The shooting happened through a period of heavy rainfall which made it difficult for neighbors to see what happened.

One witness said she was moving inside her home to escape the rainfall when she heard sounds that sounded like fireworks.

"All I heard was 'pac-pac,'" she said describing the six gunshots she heard before she called the police.

Another neighbor, who is a nurse, checked the man's pulse and determined the man was dead, said the woman, who declined to give her name.

"He was just laying here dead. This is crazy."

Neighbors said they believed the man may have just attended a funeral of another man she said was shot and killed in the area last week.

The incident occurred across the street from Helen M. Heffernan School, 4409 W. Wilcox St.

Police had no more information Friday afternoon.
