WICKER PARK — Got a bike? Want to park in Wicker Park and Bucktown?
Just look for the bright orange racks that were installed earlier this month, thanks to the Special Service Area taxing district which upped the number of its branded bike racks from 20 to 60.
Jessica Wobbekind, program manager for the taxing district, said that the 40 racks cost "just under $20,000."
The new racks supplement a 2011 installation of 20 racks and on-street bike parking in front of the Flat Iron Arts Building at 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave.
"We tried to spread them out around the whole area and kept a list of requests from businesses that wanted the racks," said Wobbekind.
As for the distinctive bright orange color, Wobbekind said the volunteers on the commission's transportation committee wanted "a color that's fun to represent the community."
Each rack can accommodate between two and four bicycles. The group is planning to add to custom branded benches in the future.
"We strive to be progressive and bike friendly neighborhood," Wobbekind said.
In addition to the bright orange racks, the city has provided numerous black U-racks in the area.
The Special Service Area levies a special tax on property owners for communal services and has a budget overseen by nine volunteer commissioners. The district boundaries are Ashland Avenue to the east, Western Avenue to the west, Division to the south and Fullerton to the north.
