'American Idol' Hopeful Devin Velez Eliminated From Top 8

By Benjamin Woodard | March 29, 2013 8:51am

EDGEWATER — A final performance that even brought Mariah Carey to tears wasn't enough to convince the full panel of judges to save Devin Velez, a Rickover Naval Academy senior and Portage Park barista, from elimination.

Velez, who was the only Chicago singer in the top eight, garnered the fewest votes Thursday after this week's "American Idol" performances filmed in Detroit.

The judges had the chance to save him after he sang a rendition of Armando Manzanero's "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)," the same song that got him into the top 10.

Mariah Carey brushed away tears and all but judge Nicki Minaj stood and applauded for Velez as the audience chanted, "Save! Save! Save!"

But it wasn't enough to convince all four judges to save Velez another week.

"It's been an honor, man. You guys, you guys are the real people," the 18-year-old crooner said, pointing to the audience. "As long as I leave with you guys and God, we're good."

Velez tweeted early this morning: "Devineers! :) its ok guys! :) im fine! We're staying positive! God has plans, and im not stopping here! Thanks so.much!"

He tweeted later he'd be in Los Angeles for media appearances.
