CPS Closings: Public Meetings Set for Peabody, Near North Special Ed School

WEST TOWN — As teachers, students and parents digest news of closures or consolidation of 54 schools across the city, CPS has announced community meeting dates and public hearings for affected schools.

In West Town, two schools have been slated for closure.

CPS has recommended that students from Peabody Elementary School at 1444 W. Augusta Blvd. be moved to Otis School at 525 N. Armour St., about nine blocks south of the Peabody campus.

Peabody School will have community meetings on the plan from 5-7 p.m. April 8 and 12 at Roberto Clemente High School, 1147 N. Western Ave. A public hearing is then scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 18 at the CPS Central Office, 125 S. Clark St.

CPS has also recommended that Near North Elementary students be moved to Montefiore School, 1310 S. Ashland Ave.

 Peabody Elementary School at 1444 W. Augusta Boulevard in West Town is scheduled to be closed. Students from Peabody will be 'welcomed' at Otis Elementary, a magnet school nine blocks south at 525 N. Armour St.

East Village Association

Near North Elementary School, 739 N. Ada St., will host community meetings from 7:30-9:30 p.m on April 10 and 15 at Lincoln Park High School, 2001 N. Orchard St. A public hearing on the plan is scheduled for 8-10 p.m. April 23 at the CPS Central Office, 125 S. Clark St.

A letter sent to parents from CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett outlined the rules for the meetings.

Anyone wanting to comment at the meetings can sign up starting one hour before the start of the event. Speakers will be given two minutes to talk, unless the hearing officer or meeting organizer grants an extension.
