CHICAGO — As part of a "DUI Strike Force Patrol" Friday night, police in the Deering District will be on the prowl for drunken drivers until the wee hours.

The Chicago Police Department's Deering District encompasses 14 square miles and serves a number of South Side neighborhoods, including Armour Square, Bridgeport, Canaryville, McKinley Park and Back of the Yards.

The "saturation" patrol is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday and will wrap up around 4 a.m. Saturday, with "roving police officers that continually monitor vehicular traffic for signs of impaired driving," police said in a statement.

They'll be looking for speeders, impaired drivers and other safety violations, including seat belt use. A mobile Breath Alcohol Testing unit might be used to test drunken drivers and speed up the process of getting them charged.

A similar crackdown in the department's Near West district resulted in 114 total tickets, including four DUI arrests, 21 insurance violations and six towed vehicles.
