ROGERS PARK — Police are investigating the apparent drowning death of a 72-year-old woman whose body was found in Lake Michigan Sunday morning.

A passerby saw the woman's body in the water near the Pratt Beach pier and called 911 at 11:19 a.m., police said.

The woman was identified as Rita Shcherbakova, who lived in an apartment in the 7400 block of North Rogers Avenue with her husband, according to someone who works in the building and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Management of the building declined to comment and said her husband also did not want to comment Monday morning.

Detectives at the scene said the death appeared to be accidental.

Police did not know how long Shcherbakova had been in the water.

The Chicago police marine unit responded to the call to pull the woman from the water.
