Amrilla Home Decor to Open on Glenwood Avenue in Former Comics Shop

By Benjamin Woodard | October 12, 2012 11:10am

ROGERS PARK — A home decor shop on Glenwood Avenue plans to open by the end of the month.

The shop, called Amrilla, is owned by Ron Reizner and Susan Hahn, who have been married for 31 years, and replaces the former tenant at 6928 N. Glenwood Ave., Evil Squirrel Comics, which closed its storefront earlier in the year due to rising rents in one of Rogers Park's most popular areas.

Antique trunks, repurposed Jeep grilles and all sorts of lamps (Reizner is a lamp-making hobbiest) were scattered around the space as the couple prepared for the opening.

Their two children are grown, so Reizner and Hahn decided to move from the suburb of Lake Forest after 18 years and into a condo in Edgewater.

"We're doing what a lot of people in our position are doing," Hahn said. "Downsizing."

Their business's slogan is "A Voyage Home," a reference to their deep roots in the neighborhood.

"When I was in my teens, I used to go to the Morse Avenue beach," Reizner said.

Reizner and Hahn frequent garage and estate sales to find most of the stuff they plan to fix up and resell.

Hahn, who is an environmental lawyer, and Reizner, who operated a cafe in Lake Forest for eight years, want to first focus on their brick-and-mortar shop, but eventually expand online.

"I love the story behind our [merchandise]," Hahn said, remembering a sale where she bought an average-sized glass serving bowl. "The woman I bought it from said, 'This bowl served 65 people potato salad in one sitting.'"

"I just had to buy it," she added.
