"Most principals have been through this before," said Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool.

CPS implemented a revamped black history curriculum in 2013, but more needs to be done, some said.

The new school in East Side will help with overcrowding in the area, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

Four years ago, more than half of CPS schools didn't have air conditioning.

"We have a generous raise on the table," said CPS CEO Forrest Claypool, who expects to reach a deal.

Marshall Middle School is relocating to Roosevelt High School to create a 7th-12th grade experience.

Chicago Public Schools also announced three schools paid for their own testing.

The district said it had a 93.4 percent attendance rate, but its data have been suspect in the past.

"The public expects and wants them to be part of it," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Chicago Teachers Union spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin accused CPS of lying and ignoring new revenue ideas.

The latest budget is based on a contract deal the Chicago Teachers Union rejected in January.

The district announced Friday that 494 teachers and 492 support personnel will get pink slips.
