State aid cuts have led students to drop out. And CSU says it needs its state funding to stay open.

Chicago's vice mayor and the well-known Republican radio pundit got into it on Twitter over the weekend.

Schools chief Forrest Claypool readied "painful layoffs to the Central Office and administrative staff."

"You’ve got to understand how capital is accessed, or you’ll never get access to capital."

Gov. Bruce Rauner insisted his plan to take over CPS is not "dead on arrival" and has support downstate.

"At this point, that's not the way things are looking," the Chicago Teachers Union chief said.

Critics said the plan was a "direct attack" on teachers and would fail Chicago's students.

A bill introduced by a Northwest Side lawmaker would restart construction, but it faces opposition.

"They're not a pawn in a political game," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel, citing a "disparity" in funding.

Gov. Bruce Rauner said he'd sign a mayoral recall bill if it reaches his desk.
