GOLD COAST — Latin School has its first state tennis champs in more than 20 years.

Senior Maya Seymore and junior Annabel Edwards won the state girls' doubles tennis title last weekend at Buffalo Grove High School.

After winning their conference and their Illinois High School Association 1A sectional for schools with enrollments under 1,382, they were seeded second in last weekend's state tournament.

Seymore and Edwards squeaked by Katie McGraw and Ellie Gallagher of Downstate Ottawa in the semifinals Saturday in three sets: 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. The middle set turned out to be the only one they dropped in the tournament.

Then they swept Anna Lytchakov and Medha Venigalla of Chatham in south suburban Glenwood in the final later Saturday in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Seymore lives in University Village, Edwards in Lincoln Park.

Seymore and Edwards also led Latin, at 1531 N. Dearborn Parkway, to a top-five finish in the state team standings in the 1A division.

It was Latin's first state tennis title since 1996.
