LAKEVIEW — A used book store that has been a Lakeview staple for almost three decades — and in its current location at 2907 N. Broadway for 18 years — will be closing its doors on Oct. 23.

Booklegger's Used Books owner Lawrence Van De Carr said the decision to close isn't a result of anything dramatic, but it's "just time." The store was open for a decade in Rogers Park before it moved to Lakeview.

"I've been doing this a long time," he said. "We've been in the neighborhood for 28 years. As you get older, you make changes."

He emphasized that, although many of his regulars have expressed sadness at the store's closing, it was the right time for him to make the decision.

"It's a neighborhood store, so people are sorry it's going away," he said. "I understand that. People say, 'It's sad.' No, it's not sad. People say, 'Are you retiring?' No, I'm not retiring. It's just time."

Van De Carr did not reveal any future plans beyond the store's closure. For now, he's focused on selling out his books — $2 for hardcovers and $1 for paperbacks — and shelving.

Booklegger's has become known over the years for its tidy but no-frills interior and for carrying some rare finds along with more standard offerings.

The store is open every day from noon to 8 p.m. through Oct. 23.
