BRIDGEPORT — An anchor of Halsted Street's main corridor is celebrating five years in business, and will do so by raffling off a vintage neighborhood sign.

This weekend, Hardscrabble will throw a 5-year anniversary celebration that will include the raffling off of a "Welcome to Bridgeport" sign, which shop owner Janet Scanlon said used to adorn street signs when she was a teenager. Raffle tickets can be picked up both Saturday and Sunday, and the business will also offer $5 off T-shirts, sweatshirts and tote bags.

It's the kind of gift that Hardscrabble, 3335 S. Halsted St., specializes in. Known for offering apparel and other gifts with a neighborhood bent, Hardscrabble is as unique a neighborhood business now as it was five years ago.

Scanlon said she never thought to open her business anywhere but Bridgeport, where she grew up and still resides.

"The other neighborhoods, they have vibrant shopping areas," said Scanlon, who owns the business with her daughter, Leanne. "So there was a need. And you can help your own community."

Scanlon said it has been heartening to see the neighborhood support a local business, and she hopes the local business community, especially on Halsted, continues to grow.

"Tenth-year anniversary, I think it'll be a lot different" around here, Scanlon said.
