Van Left Running During Delivery — And It's Promptly Stolen

By Linze Rice | October 12, 2017 2:30pm

ROGERS PARK — A 50-year-old driver who left his vehicle running while dropping off a package in Rogers Park Wednesday evening saw his van stolen shortly after he left the driver's seat.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, the man was using the white 2010 Volkswagen four-door van to make a delivery in the 1300 block of West Greenleaf Avenue. When he got out to drop off a package, a man in a hooded sweatshirt stepped into the van and took off — with the driver's cellphone and wallet inside, police said.

The van was described as one like those used by Amazon, according to a neighbor who spoke with the driver after the theft.

"He told me what happened, and I said to him that he should have had common sense not to leave the truck running unlocked with the keys inside," she told DNAinfo.

Officers in the Rogers Park Police District have put an emphasis this year on urging Rogers Park and West Ridge residents to make sure parked vehicles are left locked without the keys in the ignition.
