Sex Assault Stopped By Victim's Cellphone Ringing, Police Say

CHICAGO — A  girl escaped a sexual assault Wednesday In Austin when her cellphone rang and her attacker ran away, police said.

About 7:40 p.m., the girl was walking home when a man ran up and grabbed her in the 5500 block of West West End Avenue, police said. He pulled the girl into an alley, pushed her against a wall and tried to unbuckle her pants and take them off, police said.

That's when the girl's cellphone rang and the man ran off, police said.

The attacker was described as a black man who was 45 to 60 years old, 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds with a full beard, police said. He wore black cargo pants, a gray zip-up, hooded sweatshirt and gym shoes.

People should walk in pairs, not speak to strangers and avoid using cellphones or other devices until in a safe area, police advised.
