CHICAGO — The Bob Perkaus Memorial 5K will honor the longtime Sauganash resident's favorite pastime by inviting joggers to sweep through the neighborhood's streets Sunday, organizers announced.

The 5K race, which will loop around Sauganash Park, 5861 N. Kostner Ave., is set to kick off at 9 a.m. Registration opens at 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the race organized by the Sauganash Community Association will fund scholarships at Loyola Academy and Queen of All Saints for students who have lost a parent and will fund programs at Sauganash Park and Sauganash Elementary School in memory of Perkaus, who died in 2005.

Perkaus founded Robar Industries Inc., served as the president of the Sauganash Community Association and was a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame. He ran every day, according to his obituary in the Tribune.

The cost for individual runners is $25 until Sunday, when the cost goes up to $30. Families and groups of no more than four runners can register for $50 until Sunday, when the cost rises to $65.

Participants can register in advance by emailing scalamom5@aol.com.
