LAKEVIEW — For three years, Stellar Wines brought something much more to Lakeview than just another place to buy wine and craft beer.

The shop at 820 W. Belmont Ave. offered Friday tastings, special events and personalized service characteristic of independently-owned businesses.

But owner Luis Ortega made the tough decision to close after sales dropped dramatically over the past few months, particularly on weekdays.

"That had an immediate impact on our ability to stay in business," Ortega said in an email. "The nature of retail is rapidly changing, with online shopping and large chains quickly becoming the main source of just about everything to everyone.

"As a result," he continued, "small shops face an uphill battle to stay open, but I believe there is still opportunity out there for small businesses. We just have to continue to be resourceful, innovative and firmly believe in what we are doing, day in and day out."

On Sept. 16, Ortega shared via Facebook that the shop would be closing, writing, "It is time for us to wine down." The next day, he shared details of the closing sale, writing that he would be accepting cash only for wine and beer and cash or checks for furniture and decorative items.

Fans of the shop reacted with heartfelt comments, like, "You have our hearts and so many wonderful memories," "If you only knew how many hearts this is gonna break" and "You and your wine have gladdened me and my friends' hearts for the past couple of years, Luis. Wishing you the best!"

"Personalized, friendly customer service, a great selection, an inviting, welcoming space and true passion for wine is what set us apart," Ortega said. "I think that Stellar was more than just a place to buy wine or craft beer; it was a place where people came for recommendations, advice, conversation, education and fun — sort of a community center, with wine!"

Ortega is still busy clearing out the shop, but his mind is already on the future. Though he doesn't have a concrete plan for his next move, he promises he'll keep his loyal customers in the loop when he does have something to announce.

"I'm still working on it," he said.
