MOUNT GREENWOOD — Fighters from the Army West Point Boxing team will share their stories along with tips for aspiring boxers from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday in Mount Greenwood.

Over the last nine years, the service academy's men's boxing team has claimed seven National Collegiate Boxing Association titles. And last year, the women's boxing team won the national title in Lawrenceburg, Ind.

The boxers will be at an open workout at the Chicago Celtic Boxing Club at 3012 W. 111th St., according Mike Joyce, proprietor of the neighborhood gym on the Far Southwest Side.

Everyone is invited to the free event that will include a question-and-answer session with the fighters, Joyce said.

These fighters "have some really compelling stories," said Joyce, adding that several were once homeless and others left gang life to become prominent boxers and members of the Army.

The fighters will later step into the ring with other boxers from Chicago at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Worth Township Village Hall at 11601 S. Pulaski in south suburban Alsip.

It costs $10 to attend the fights, and tickets will be available at the door. Admission is free for veterans and first responders. For more information call 312-485-2210.

"These guys are really the best of the best and pure amateurs too," Joyce said.
