One of just a handful of city lagoons where fishing is allowed, the water in this sprawling pond at the 70-acre McKinley Park, 2210 W. Pershing Road, is stocked with nearly as many bluegill, bass, catfish and carp as there are tales from the old-timers who fish there.

MCKINLEY PARK — Neighborhood kids will be able to try their hand at fishing at McKinley Park's fishing derby Saturday.

The first annual fishing derby will be open to kids ages 7 to 13 and will take place at the McKinley Park lagoon, 2210 W. Pershing Road, from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Kids of all skill levels are encouraged to attend the event, and a limited number of fishing poles, tackle and bait will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the event's website.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will "heavily" stock the lagoon with fish prior to the event, and prizes will be offered for catching fish.

Those wishing to attend should register by calling 773-869-9050. The event is free.
