BUCKTOWN — A thief got into the lobby of Bucktown's Clocktower Lofts and stole at least two packages from two different residents last weekend, police said.
Building resident Ray Krauze said the thefts happened between late Saturday and 4:29 a.m Sunday.
It was the second time the 113-unit Clocktower Lofts, 2300 W. Wabansia Ave., has been targeted for package thefts — and Krauze was a victim both times.
Last fall, a thief managed to slide through a door that was about to close after another resident entered the building, stole Krauze's just-delivered credit card and went on a shopping spree.
Krauze called the second incident "beyond frustrating," especially since the condo building's management installed a new steel front door and it is unknown how the man was able to get inside.
"My understanding is that he forced his way in by using some object. No one really knows for sure what he used or how he used it to get in the door," Krauze said.
The building's management did not provide video footage to residents but emailed several still photos to the condo owners so the public can be on the alert.
Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman, confirmed that two residents of the building filed theft reports.
In both instances, clothing items bought online — including shirts and shoes — were stolen.
Trainor was unable to confirm that a man who was arrested at 10:32 a.m. Wednesday near Chicago and Homan avenues on the Near West Side could be tied to the thefts. A resident shared a video on a private Facebook page of a man stealing packages there, who matches the same description of the alleged Bucktown package thief.
Trainor said charges are pending for the man arrested on the Near West side on Wednesday, who is in police custody. A detective working on the case declined to comment, saying the matter is under investigation.
