EDGEWATER — School is back in session, which means it's time for the 4th Annual Edgewater 5K Run/Walk to again hit the streets.

Each year, a portion of each registrant's fee goes toward a school in the 48th Ward of his or her choice, and since the race's start in 2013 over $15,000 has been raised for 13 local schools, benefiting over 7,000 students.

The path takes participants from Loyola University's St. Ignatius Plaza at Rosemont and Kenmore down to Sheridan Road's high-rise canyon and along Edgewater's lakefront, a scenic route rarely traveled by Chicago 5Ks.

The event begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Registration for the 5K run is $40, or participants can also opt to walk 1 mile for $35. Each registration comes with a T-shirt, medal, pancake breakfast, a beer from Empirical Brewery and donation to the school of choice.

Those who wish to donate but not participate can also sponsor a student for $25.

Registration packets can be picked up Friday and Saturday at Orange Shoe Personal Fitness, 5609 N. Clark St.

Long-time Edgewater resident and an award-winning meteorologist for WGN Tom Skilling will be among those attending the event.
