CHICAGO — A gunman broke into his ex-girlfriend's Chatham home and shot her new companion early Saturday morning, police said.

The gunman broke into his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend's home, confronting her and her new 27-year-old male companion, police said. He hit his ex-girlfriend in the head and shot her companion in both arms, police said.

About 4:30 a.m. Saturday, officers arrived in the 8100 block of South Maryland Avenue and spotted the gunman leaving the scene.

An officer shot at the gunman as he left the scene, and missed, but he was arrested shortly afterward, police said.

The wounded man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said. The woman refused medical treatment.

Charges are pending.
